Brian Iphone Jan 2015 026The 4 steps to receiving blessings from God in your life. Observations and personal experience have led me to conclude that it boils down to 4 basic steps to receiving an abundance of blessings in your life.  They are as follows:

    1.  Declare your faith

Words have the power to influence for better or for worse, not only other people, but the person speaking them.  The right words spoken can improve your situation, peace of mind and your overall outlook on life.  This is especially true when the words spoken are in accordance with God’s Word.  This is when the spoken word can go from just influence to supernatural.  God’s Word is where the real power is.  Put Jesus first place in your life and confess agreement with some scripture to go with your prayers and declare that you know God is turning things around in your favor.  While it is natural to guess at how God will do it, you need to be open to the fact that God may answer in an unexpected way.  Place your trust in God, which means stop worrying about the problem and realize that God is still in control and He will bring you out of the situation His way and on His timetable, which will be perfect. Act on this faith by doing all that you can and trust God to finish what you can’t do.  As it says in Hebrews 12: 1-2, “Run your own race with perseverance, with your eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and finisher of your faith”.

     2. Write down the blessings

Recognize the small blessings and not just the large ones and give God credit.  James 1:17 says that every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from God our Father.  Start writing them down.  I know you don’t have time to write them all down, but try to get into the habit of taking time to write down some blessings.  When you do this it means you are truly focused on the positive and not the problems.  You’ll start to realize the many ways in which God is working in your life, blessing you, and this will begin to strengthen your faith, increase your peace of mind, optimism and lessen the amount of worry in your life.  There is a saying in business, “Success breeds success” and the same is true with blessings, but not if you go around taking them for granted and instead dwelling on the negative.  Successful business people don’t go into meetings telling the client how everything at their company is going wrong.  They focus on the positive and benefits of what they have to offer and hype up the greatness of their company. Start hyping up the greatness of God!  Give a testimony!  Spread the good news of Christ’s grace, mercy and how He can transform a life.  Our God is an awesome God.  Write it down and tell someone!

So, what keeps us from doing this?  Unfortunately, the brain is wired to remember and focus on the negative more than the positive.  It is the brain’s natural defense mechanism against future pain. However, you can practice keeping focus on the positive. Nine good things could happen and only one slightly annoying thing and that one bad circumstance ruins the day for many people, despite the far outnumbered positive events of the day.  When that one unfortunate event happens, that is the perfect time to change the channel in your brain from the negative to the positive channel.  That is done by stopping, thinking of the blessings from God, writing some of them down and perhaps telling someone about them.

    3. Be a blessing

I’m fairly certain most people are familiar with the biblical concept of planting seed to illustrate reaping a great harvest.  However, due to time demands and financial concerns, people often slide more towards the worldly view that says, “I’m looking out for number 1, me.”  This goes to show that sometimes the ways of the world are completely counter-intuitive to God’s wisdom.  Part of faith is trusting that God’s wisdom is the right wisdom. Just as riches are often defined differently by God than popular culture today, so are the concepts of giving and blessing others with time, care and financial help.  For instance, in the natural, if I spend a half hour helping someone with their problem, that is a half hour less that day I have to deal with my own problems, right? And the math just doesn’t add up to give 10% of your income to a local church and expect to end up with more. However, I’ve seen that to be the case in my life and in that of many others when its done with the right heart.  Sure, the math says I have only 90% of my money. However, when you combine that giving with step 1, the faith in God known as El Shaddai, God Almighty, you’ll be trusting in the same God to make more of your 90% than you alone can do with your 100% just as Abraham, Isaac and Jacob did.  God was called El Shaddai by Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and even Job for that matter. These were men of the Bible that God blessed tremendously with wealth and importance primarily due to their unwavering faith and trust in God.  And just to encourage us normal folks that have made past mistakes of deceit, greediness and selfishness, God made sure there was Jacob prominently in the mix.  God taught us through the story of Jacob that we can mess up our whole life over and over again, but when we seek the Lord and seek forgiveness, His grace is more than sufficient, as Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 12:9. God is always ready to give us a second, third, fourth, etc. chance and let the blessings rain down when our heart becomes right with God. That right heart is going to include all of these four steps, faith, recognizing the blessings, a willingness to bless others and finally number four.

     4.  Be thankful

It would almost not seem possible to experience the prior steps without capping it off with a thankful heart. Set aside a private time each day with God to just praise His name and express thankfulness for the favor He’s delivering in your life.  He is Jehovah Jireh, our daily provider of what we need just as He was to the Israelites in the desert searching for the Promised Land.  He also said in Ephesians 3:20 that He is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us.  Express thanks for His Holy Spirit filling us and guiding us, being that power within us fulfilling so many promises of God, the one in Ephesians and also the fruits of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22 (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control).  These are the divine riches and true blessings that all the money in the world can’t buy.  Money and wealth can be awesome blessings and a means to greatly bless others when they are kept in perspective with God’s wisdom.

When you are developing these 4 steps; declaring a strong faith, counting your blessings, blessing others and giving praise and thanks with a focus on God’s Word, promises and timing, you are walking with and trusting God. Psalm 84:12 says blessed is the one who trusts in God. After the most important blessing from God, the grace of forgiveness and salvation in Jesus Christ, these steps will allow the Holy Spirit to guide you into the fullness of God’s destiny for your life as chosen one of God. You will be a person, as Psalm 1:3 says, “like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither, you will prosper in all you do”.
